VERITAS - WHAT'S ALL ABOUT

The Veritas Awards competition has earned the status as South Africa's most trusted competition for market-ready wines and brandies. Producers and consumers put their faith in the judging process of this, the oldest and most prominent wine contest of its kind in South Africa, dating back to 1991 and bearing testimony to the words ...

VINO VERITAS - IN WINE IS TRUTH.

The yardstick of wine and brandy excellence
Consumers are increasingly aware of the results and use the Veritas Awards as a yardstick when selecting wines for both their enjoyment and collection. A Double Gold, Gold, Silver Outstanding, Silver or Bronze Veritas sticker on a bottle is indeed a great motivator to buy the best wines on show.
More than 1 200 entries are annually received and judged at a single venue, namely Nederburg in Paarl.

Highly stringent points system
In line with leading international competition standards, the fine-tuned scoring system at Veritas works as follows:
Double Gold: 93 - 100 points
Gold: 90 - 92
Silver Outstanding: 86 - 89
Silver: 80 - 85
Bronze: 75 - 79.
This stringent approach adds value for both the participant and the winning wine.

Vertex - the wine pinnacle
The Vertex award for the overall champion wine of the competition was introduced in 2017, where a panel consisting of the international judges select the top wine of the show from all the Double Gold winners, excluding the Museum Class wines.
With the successful presentation of Double Gold winners tastings in London and Hong Kong since 2019, but interrupted by Covid, and resumed last year, this will find new momentum moving forward.

Top judging accreditation and experience
Veritas strives to enhance the quality and professional execution of the judging process to continue the development and growth of this competition. To taste wines at Veritas, a judging accreditation is essential. In addition, overseas judges must have recognised international experience. The local array of more than 50 judges consists of a variety of winemakers, researchers, academics, Cape Wine Masters, wine buyers, sommeliers, wine writers and consultants.
While younger tasters, sommeliers and specialists with a commercial background will always be included on the tasting panels, the expertise and experience of senior judges will always be a priority.

All for the consumer - direct from the industry
Veritas will continue to fulfil its role as a consumer-oriented wine competition, run by the industry for the industry. It is the only competition in South Africa where consumers can rely on the availability of the award-winning wines, as a condition of entry is that a minimum of 300 bottles must be available for sale when the results are announced. For Noble Late Harvest, Fortified Wines, Cape Ruby/Tawny/Vintage Wines and Brandy, the required quantities are lower.
Judging takes place during September each year and the awards function is held early October. This enables the participants to have the award-winning wines with their respective stickers in the market ready for the important end-of-year sales period.

Ground-breaking app for online ordering
A proud moment in the 30-year plus history of Veritas saw the launch of a unique mobile phone application that has benefited both the South African wine industry and the consumer. The specially developed VinoVeritas by CTP App was introduced at the 2020 Awards ceremony - which immediately makes the coveted Veritas Gold and Double Gold medal winning wines and brandies available for easy, online ordering and delivery on buyers' doorsteps. This is a first in the world of wine competitions by Veritas.
A prospective wine buyer can now simply download the app, register and then place orders, thanks to a ground-breaking collaboration between the organisers, the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA) and CTP Packaging, Getwine and Cognition FoneWorx.

SO MUCH EASIER TO EXPERIENCE EXCELLENCE.
